Discover Carrickfergus Castle
Since the 12th century, Carrickfergus Castle has caught the attention of everyone who has seen it… and not always in a good way.
Built by an Anglo-Norman knight called John de Courcy in 1177, this dramatic structure has been besieged by the Scottish, Irish, English and French over the centuries. Today, visitors are attracted by its history and beauty, and with its stunning location on the shores of Belfast Lough, it’s most definitely a scene stealer. As well as being subjected to numerous attacks over the years, Carrickfergus Castle acted as a prison during the Napoleonic Wars and a garrison during World War I, so it’s certainly got a few stories to share. And yet despite its turbulent history, it stands proud today as one of the best-preserved medieval structures on the island of Ireland.
Surrounded by water, the castle presents a striking sight with its four-storey tower looming over the castle walls. Step inside and it’s not hard to imagine a time when battles raged and canons boomed. For unrivalled views out over the lough, climb to the top of the keep and walk the castle walls where you’ll find canons dating from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Inside, the banquet hall feels pure Game of Thrones®, while more intrigue can be found in the armoury and vaults. Information plaques, displays and a video presentation will give you an in-depth understanding of the castle’s history and that of Carrickfergus town.

Carrickfergus Visitor Information Centre is located within the castle where you’ll also find handmade crafts and castle memorabilia.
Guided tours of the castle are available when pre-booked.
There is limited access throughout the castle for wheelchair users.
