St Brigid’s Cathedral and Round Tower
On the site where St Brigid founded a nunnery in the 5th century in Kildare town, you’ll find a 19th century cathedral and 12th century round tower.
Although rebuilt in 1833 the cathedral’s history can still be seen in the carvings dating to the Early Christian and Norman times, religious artefacts and a 16th century vault. The story of St Brigid’s life and legacy is depicted in a beautiful stained glass window with the patron saint colourfully presented next to the rest of Ireland’s Holy Trinity.
Overlooking the cathedral’s graveyard is the 33-metre-tall Round Tower. Besides its height, a prominent feature is the decorated granite surrounding the doorway raised four metres above the ground. Climb to the top for panoramic views of County Kildare.
