From friendly bars and fun club nights to insightful exhibitions and organised hikes, Ireland has lots to offer LGBTQ+ visitors
Ireland is one of the safest and friendliest destinations in the world for the LGBTQ+ community. Since the decriminalisation of homosexuality, there has been a continuous shift towards acceptance, culminating with the Republic of Ireland becoming the first country in the world to vote overwhelmingly in favour of same-sex marriage.
So if you’re coming here, you can be sure of your welcome, which just leaves the question of what to do… Obviously, the island’s epic landscapes, historic landmarks and vibrant culture are waiting to be discovered. But if you’re looking to connect with the LGBTQ+ community, we’ve got some suggestions.
Where to go
Cities are where you’ll find most of the action. Belfast’s Smithfield and Union Quarter and Dublin’s Rainbow Mile are great places to start your trip, with a variety of shops, restaurants and bars to visit. Look out also for some fascinating LGBTQ+-focused exhibitions in both cities’ museums and galleries.
When you’re ready to explore beyond the cities, our advice is to go where your mood takes you! Thanks to a strong attitude of inclusivity, Ireland really is open to all!
When to come
So you’ve decided you’re coming to Ireland but when should you travel? We’d recommend Pride month in June, where you’ll find Pride festivals taking place around the island. And of course, St Patrick's Day in March, which we celebrate in style!
But really, there’s never a bad time to come to Ireland!
